West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase and middle-order batsman Shamarh Brooks were called up to the squad for the two-Test series in Australia on Saturday, while Tagenarin, son of former captain Shivnarin Chanderpaul, got his maiden call-up.
The West Indies, ranked eighth in the world in Test cricket, will play the first Test against top-ranked Australia in Perth on November 30, followed by the second in Adelaide on December 8.
“We have played two series this year – against England and Bangladesh – and won both. We have played good Test cricket and expect to do well against the Australians at home,” lead selector Desmond Haynes said in a statement.
Haynes praised the 26-year-old Tagenarine, who will get the chance to make his West Indies debut 28 years after his father Shivnarine, considered one of the greatest batsmen of his era, made his Test debut for the Caribbean side.
“He prepared himself very well in the four-day West Indies Championship and also did very well at the top of the order against Bangladesh A… He has what it takes to do well at the highest level,” Haynes said. .
Haynes said Chase’s experience and skill set will benefit the team, while Brooks’ return will bolster their middle-order hitting.
